Dave goes on another Backshall Expedition

Steve Backshall in Oman during series one

UKTV-owned comedy channel Dave has picked up a second season of Expedition with Steve Backshall.

The 4×60’ season sees naturalist and TV presenter Backshall, along with his crew of adventurist experts, exploring parts of the globe that have rarely been seen.

In the first season, coproduced with BBC2, Backshall and his team documented several world firsts, venturing into unmapped rainforest and unrun rivers, descending into unexplored canyons and diving into undiscovered underwater caves.

Expedition with Steve Backshall is produced by UK-based natural history prodco True to Nature alongside Fremantle. Exec producers are Richard Watsham and Wendy Darke. Fremantle is handling international distribution.

In an effort to curb its environmental impact, the first season of the series was UKTV’s first carbon neutral production and series two will follow in its footsteps.

Watsham, UKTV director of commissioning, said: “The success of Expedition with Steve Backshall is proof that Dave can deliver quality, premium factual that combines high drama and, as UKTV’s first carbon neutral production, social responsibility.”

UKTV is also set to produce and broadcast the accompanying documentary Expedition Unseen (1×60’), which will take viewers deeper into each of the four new expeditions undertaken by Backshall and his crew, as well as revealing the physical challenges and additional wildlife encounters.

The announcement of the new series joins other recent Dave commissions including Mel Giedroyc: Unforgivable, World’s Most Dangerous Roads and returning Comedians Giving Lectures, Hypothetical and Sliced.

Coming to the channel in the first half of 2020 are Big Zuu’s Big Eats, Meet The Richardsons and Comedy Against Living Miserably as well as Red Dwarf, returning for a feature length special.
