BBC2 in the UK has acquired a 10-part series based on Lawrence Wright’s book about the rising threat of Osama Bin Laden and al-Qaeda in the late 1990s.

The Looming Tower will air on BBC2 this spring and stars Jeff Daniels, Tahar Rahim and Peter Sarsgaard, plus guest star Alec Baldwin, having originally been made for US streamer Hulu.

Based on Wright’s Pulitzer Prize-winning non-fiction book of the same name, The Looming Tower also explores how the rivalry between the FBI and CIA may have inadvertently set the path for the terrorist attacks by al-Qaeda on September 11, 2001.

The Looming Tower is executive produced by Dan Futterman, Alex Gibney, Lawrence Wright, Craig Zisk and Adam Rapp. It is a Legendary Television production for Hulu.

Sue Deeks, the BBC’s head of programme acquisitions, said: “Brilliantly weaving archive footage with tense and compelling drama, The Looming Tower is a fascinating and illuminating deconstruction of the personalities and events that ultimately led to the horror of 9/11.”
