Netflix has appointed the former president of Universal Television as its VP of content.

Bela Bajaria, who replaces VP of global television Sean Carey, will lead the team focused on TV and film licensing from US studios as well as coproductions with US networks.

She will report directly to chief content officer Ted Sarandos, who said: “We know we have found the perfect executive to lead this new effort.”

Bejaria left her role at Universal Television in June. She was one of NBC chairman Bob Greenblatt’s first major executive hires when she joined from CBS TV Studios in 2011.

In the latest round of series orders, Universal’s productions were down from 12 in 2015 to just seven for the forthcoming season, a decline that ultimately led to Bajaria’s exit.

As Universal Television president, Bajaria was responsible for series including The Mindy Project (now at Hulu), Master of None and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (both at Netflix), and Bates Motel (A&E).

In her new role, she will oversee development of original unscripted content for Netflix. Her position is separate from VP of original content Cindy Holland’s department.

“I am looking forward to joining Netflix, an innovative company that supports creative vision and fosters risk-taking,” Bajaria said.
