Amazon UK checks into New Amsterdam

New Amsterdam is based on the book Twelve Patients: Life and Death at Bellevue Hospital

Amazon has acquired UK rights to NBC medical drama New Amsterdam, helmed by David Schulner (Do No Harm) and starring Ryan Eggold (The Blacklist).

Set in an understaffed and underfunded hospital, the show was inspired by Bellevue, the oldest public hospital in America.

It is based on the book Twelve Patients: Life and Death at Bellevue Hospital by Eric Manheimer, who spent 15 years as medical director at the hospital.

It will be made available to Prime subscribers in the UK from February 8. It is produced by Universal Television in association with Pico Creek Productions and Mount Moriah.

In related news, Amazon Prime Video has confirmed February 15 as the premiere date for four-part docuseries Lorena, executive produced by Jordan Peele (Get Out).

Produced by Monkeypaw, Sonar Entertainment and Number 19, it investigates the case of Lorena Bobbitt, who made headlines 25 years ago when she cut off her husband John Wayne’s penis while he was asleep. It was subsequently re-attached by surgeons.
