Chile’s Fabula makes Spanish debut with Disney+ thriller Un perfecto extraño

The show centres on a young man who reappears after being missing for five years

Oscar-winning Chilean production company Fabula, founded by brothers Pablo and Juan de Dios Larraín, has begun filming four-part thriller Un perfecto extraño (A Perfect Stranger) for Disney+, its first scripted production in Spain.

The series, a Spanish Hulu original for Disney+, is directed by Manuel Martín Cuenca (Caníbal, El autor) in his television drama debut and stars Patricia López Arnaiz, Lola Dueñas and Alberto San Juan.

The project marks another step in the international expansion of Fabula, whose credits include films Jackie, Spencer and A Fantastic Woman, and TV series El presidente, La jauría and Baby Bandito.

Fabula has been strengthening its ties with the Spanish industry through development partnerships with production companies including Brutal Media and Alea Media. Last year, the company opened an office in Madrid headed by Álvaro Cabello, while it is also preparing to establish a presence in Buenos Aires.

Un perfecto extraño is being filmed in Jaén, southern Spain, and is written by Martín Cuenca and Lola Mayo. The cast also includes Blanca Soroa, Agustín Domínguez and Fidel González.

The series follows Juan, a 17-year-old who reappears after being missing for five years, offering no explanation for what happened. His return shakes his family and raises questions about his true identity, while a police inspector attempts to piece together the events surrounding his disappearance.

Pablo and Juan de Dios Larraín said in a joint statement: “We are interested in telling deeply human stories that allow us to explore how a family copes with the loss of a child. Un perfecto extraño is one of them.”

Sofía Fábregas, VP of original production at Disney+ Spain, added: “It is a privilege to work with Fabula, founded by Pablo and Juan de Dios Larraín, whose storytelling has connected with audiences around the world. For Disney+, it is particularly exciting to support Fabula as it enters the Spanish market with Un perfecto extraño.”

The collaboration is part of Disney+’s original production strategy in Spain, where the streamer says it has already backed more than 17 original series.
