Disney+ takes Ryan Coogler’s The X-Files reboot to series

The X-Files originally aired on Fox from 1993

Disney+ has taken Ryan Coogler’s reimagining of classic 90s show The X-Files to series.

The Hulu Original series, from Onyx Collective and produced by 20th Television in association with Coogler’s prodco Proximity Media, will star Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel.

The show follows two highly decorated but vastly different FBI agents who form an unlikely bond when they are assigned to a long-shuttered division devoted to cases involving unexplained phenomena.

“I’ve loved The X-Files for a long time, so getting the chance to write and direct the pilot has meant a great deal to me,” said Coogler. “What Chris Carter created is special, and we wanted to honour everything that made the original series connect with so many people while also finding our own way into that world.”

Coogler wrote, directed and executive produced the pilot and will serve as executive producer of the series, along with showrunner and executive producer Jennifer Yale.

The exec producers also include Zinzi Coogler, Sev Ohanian and Carter, while Simone Harris, Deadwyler and Patel are co-exec producers.

US broadcast network Fox aired nine seasons of the original series, starring Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny, from 1993. The new show will air on Disney-owned streamer Hulu in the US and on Disney+ worldwide.
