UKTV brings back Whitehouse’s Smash

UKTV’s Gold channel has commissioned a show that will see actor and comedian Paul Whitehouse revive his radio host character Mike Smash this Christmas.

Smashie’s Xmastastic Playlist (2×60’), a UKTV original written by Whitehouse and Dave Cumming, will air across two days in December.

Mike Smash, a presenter for Fab FM, first appeared in a sketch in the classic BBC comedy series Harry Enfield’s Television Programme during the 1990s.

The two-part special was ordered for UKTV by Richard Watsham, director of commissioning, and Steve North, general manager for entertainment and comedy.

Commissioned by Joe McVey, it is being produced by North One, with John Quinn as executive producer and Sean Doherty directing.

Simulcast between Gold and Smash’s new broadcasting home Radio Hush, the show will feature Christmas classics alongside lesser-known selections.

UKTV unveiled its largest originals slate for its channels last month.
