Syfy axes Wheaton project

US cable network Syfy has cancelled its comedy talkshow fronted by Star Trek: The Next Generation actor Wil Wheaton after just one season.

The geek culture expert wrote on his blog that a Syfy exec had told him The Wil Wheaton Project was not being renewed.

Wheaton said that a “disinterested assistant” had connected him with the unnamed Syfy exec, and added: “The line fell silent, and I knew that my work with Syfy was over.”

Syfy greenlit the 12×30’ series in April for a May 27 debut. The show saw Wheaton discuss topics ranging from new TV shows to video games and internet phenomena.

The Wil Wheaton Project was produced by California-based Pilgrim Studios and exec produced by Craig Piligian and Mike Nichols.

Wheaton originally said the show would be a “TalkSoup for geeks,” referring to the long-running series that aired on US cable network E! until 2002.
