Sky returns to Britannia

Britannia

European satcaster Sky has commissioned a second season of one of its original productions to air on Sky Atlantic and streaming service Now TV.

Britannia was created, written and produced by Jez Butterworth (Spectre) and Tom Butterworth (Tin Star) and launched earlier this year.

James Richardson (Monsters) also co-created and executive produced the show through Vertigo Films alongside Sam Mendes, Pippa Harris and Nicolas Brown from Neal Street Productions. Sky Vision is the global distributor.

Britannia stars David Morrissey, Kelly Reilly, Zoë Wanamaker and Mackenzie Crook. Set in 43AD, the drama follows the Roman army as they return to crush the Celtic heart of Britannia, a land led by warrior women and Druids.

The nine-part first season was the biggest Sky original production launch on Sky Atlantic since Fortitude, with the first episode watched by a cumulative audience of 1.88 million. Filming on season two will begin this spring.
