RTÉ to outsource all kids content

Irish pubcaster RTÉ has confirmed it will outsource all of its programming for young people to the independent sector in a huge cost-saving measure.

The decision will not affect the number of shows being made for children and teenagers on the national broadcaster’s channels RTÉjr and RTÉ2.

However, the move will cut operating costs internally and freelance staff working on internal contracts may have to re-apply for their roles with an indie production company.

RTÉ’s decision will come into play at the end of 2017.

A statement by RTÉ said: “Recognising the challenging financial environment, and to achieve stronger efficiencies and value for money, RTÉ is to make changes to how it produces young people’s programmes.

“After an examination of all output, a decision has been made to commission all young people’s programmes from the independent sector, enabling RTÉ to meet its statutory committed spend in the sector and reduce operating costs internally.

“RTÉ is not reducing its commitment to younger people’s programmes, nor it’s spend.”

Memorable RTÉ children’s TV shows include Wanderly Wagon, Bosco and The Den with puppets Zig & Zag.

The news comes in the same week that RTÉ director general Dee Forbes said the organisation is under “very serious financial strain” following the UK’s decision to leave the European Union.

Forbes said for RTÉ’s focus will be investment in high-quality Irish programming, storytelling and journalism.
