Kavanagh takes CBBC reins BBC head of planning and scheduling Damian Kavanagh has been named as the new controller of CBBC. Kavanagh replaces Anne Gilchrist who is joining the BBC's in-house comedy department as creative and business director. He will start his new role in September on an initial year's attachment overseeing all programmes and multiplatform commissioning for the CBBC Channel and the two dedicated blocks on BBC1 and 2. He joins from Daytime where he is currently head of planning and scheduling and executive producer on shows such as Escape to the Country, Hospital Heroes and The Unsellables. Kavanagh has previously worked as head of scheduling at BBC Children's, and as an indie commissioning executive on, amongst others, Hider In The House, The Sorcerer's Apprentice and The Underdog Show. Prior to this he was head of planning and scheduling for BBC3 and was acting controller following Stuart Murphy's departure. Richard Deverell, controller of BBC Children's said: "Damian will bring fantastic vision, creativity and drive to CBBC. He worked with Anne two years ago in establishing the current CBBC positioning and is determined to strengthen and build on this with new ideas. "He is wholly dedicated to public service broadcasting and to delighting children with wonderful experiences on the website and the channel." Kavanagh added: "It's a very exciting time to be working in children's programming." Jules Grant 21 Jul 2009 © C21 Media 2009
