BBC recreates C19th Welsh farm The BBC has again focused on period living conditions by commissioning a series that takes two Welsh families and immerses them in 19th century life. Snowdonia Farmhouse will be produced by Indus Television, the company behind the series Coal House.Indus, which was recently acquired by fellow Welsh indie Boomerang Plus, is currently seeking suitable families to take the trip through the time tunnel. "We want to hear from families across Wales who think they can survive life in a Victorian hillside cottage," said series producer Ceri Rowlands. "It will be physically and mentally challenging for them as they will have to learn to farm the land using 19th century farming techniques." Filming will take place during March and April next year. The commission came via Clare Hudson, BBC Wales' head of English-language programmes, who described the show as "a collision of social history and real-life drama." The social history theme is something that BBC channels have long been exploring, with BBC2 recently commissioning Lion TV to make daytime series Escape In Time (20x45'). The BBC also this summer ordered a 3x60' follow-up to Victorian Farm – the six-part historical ob-doc that aired on BBC2 in January – as well as the 12x60' series Edwardian Farm. The reality-TV-meets-social-history genre began in 1999 with Wall to Wall TV's Channel 4 series The 1900 House. The show spawned follow-ups such as The 1940s House, Country House and, in overseas markets, Frontier House and Colonial House. Ed Waller 29 Oct 2009 © C21 Media 2009 |
