Hollywood soap scribes pick up pens Several Writers' Guild of America (WGA) soap writers have decided to cross the Hollywood strike picket lines in a bid to keep their jobs. According to US sources, a senior showrunner on CBS's The Young and the Restless told the WGA that he plans to give up his full union membership in order to continue writing throughout the strike. Other scribes on the show are also understood to have opted out and another is considering it. A writer on NBC's Days Of Our Lives may also be considering returning to work. Strike defectors are still rare. There have been no reports yet of writers on primetime or late-night shows crossing the picket lines. Many top showrunners are still striking despite studio threats to hold them in breach of contract, as reported by C21 yesterday. Ratings for the US soaps have been declining for several years. NBC has pointed out that Days Of Our Lives may not be renewed when its licence agreement expires. Yesterday, C21 reported that the union's WGA East branch had become embroiled in a row with talkshow host Ellen DeGeneres over her decision to continue filming her syndicated talkshow during the strike. DeGeneres is understood to be the only variety host to return to work so far. 13 Nov 2007 © C21 Media 2007 |
