NBCU’s Zalaznick joins Shazam

Former NBCUniversal (NBCU) channel head Lauren Zalaznick has been appointed to the board of directors at media firm Shazam.

Zalaznick, who left NBCU in September, joins the music recognition service as it attempts to broaden its appeal by including TV programming and advertising.

She was most recently exec VP at NBCU where she was tasked with innovation, digital, monetisation and emerging technology, and before that had been head of its Bravo and Oxygen networks. She left NBCU as part of a management reshuffle by CEO Steve Burke.

Andrew Fisher, executive chairman at Shazam, said Zalaznick’s “expertise on the intersection of content, technology and data” would “bring tremendous value to Shazam as we pursue our mission to be the world’s leading media engagement company.”

Zalaznick added: “This is a unique opportunity to deploy data and technology in the content space that will enhance Shazam’s consumer experience and deliver value to its customers.”

Shazam claims to have more than 450 million users, 90 million of which use the service each month. It recently announced a new feature that enables users to automatically identify music, TV shows and TV ads without having to press any buttons on their devices.
