NBCU cuts back Seeso staffing

NBCUniversal (NBCU) has cut the workforce at its comedy-focused SVoD service Seeso following last month’s departure of Evan Shapiro, who had been overseeing the streamer.

Seeso launched in 2016 and offers an array of NBC comedy programming including Saturday Night Live, as well as acquisitions such as UK show Flowers and originals including Take My Wife.

Shapiro joined as exec VP of NBCU Digital Enterprises in 2015 after leaving Participant Media and before that worked for Sundance Channel. His exit put Seeso’s future in doubt.

A handful of staff have now been axed by the streamer, according to US reports, although most are likely to remain at NBCU in different roles.

Seeso, which costs users US$3.99 a month, is overseen by Maggie Suniewick, president of NBCU Digital Enterprises, but reports have suggested the streamer could be set to move away from original programming as execs ponder its future.

The streamer’s forthcoming slate includes a third season of real estate series Bajillion Dollar Propertie$ and Paul Reiser and David Steven Simon’s comedy There’s… Johnny!.
