HBO lines up Akil comedy

HBO is developing a new comedy series with TV and film director Salim Akil in the vein of Larry David’s Curb Your Enthusiasm.

The US cable network has teamed up with Akil for Mr Director, a single-camera project he is set to write, produce and direct.

Like David in Curb Your Enthusiasm, Akil will play a version of himself in Mr Director, which will explore his life in the entertainment business, looking at his path to becoming one of Hollywood’s top showrunners and directors.

Akil is currently finishing season seven of Black Entertainment Television’s (BET) reality series The Game, on which he serves as director and co-showrunner alongside the series’ creator, his producing partner/wife, Mara Brock Akil.

Curb Your Enthusiasm, produced and broadcast by HBO, premiered in October 2000 and has aired 80 episodes over eight seasons, the last of which broadcast in 2011.
