Canada snaps up Sony’s fall slate

LA SCREENINGS: Broadcasters in Canada have moved quickly to secure rights to all five new shows from Sony Pictures Television (SPT) coming to the US this fall, including crime drama The Mob Doctor and reality series The Job.

Bell Media has acquired rights to The Mob Doctor, which has been taken to series by Fox and is produced by Osprey Production Group and Rooney McP Productions, in association with SPT. The story follows a young surgeon who is forced to moonlight as a ‘mob doctor’ when her brother becomes indebted to the Chicago mafia.

Meanwhile, Shaw Global has secured rights to dramas Last Resort and Made in Jersey, sitcom Save Me, and The Job. Produced by Middkidd Productions in association with SPT for ABC, the series follows the crew of a nuclear submarine who become fugitives in the South Pacific after refusing to carry out orders.

Made in Jersey, which is part of CBS’s fall line-up, is about a young working class lawyer who uses her street smarts to get ahead at a prestigious New York law firm. It is produced by Left Coast Productions, Fanfare, CBS Television Studios and SPT.

Save Me stars Anne Heche as a housewife who has a near-death experience and now believes she is God’s prophet. NBC has ordered the half-hour comedy from producers Original Film, the John Scott Shepherd Company and SPT.

Shaw will also air The Job, a reality series that gives contestants the chance to win a dream job at one of the world’s most prestigious companies. Embassy Row and SPT are producing the series for CBS.

Other shows also distributed by SPT include Community, The Client List, Justified, Breaking Bad, and The Big C.

The US broadcast networks held their Upfront presentations last week to announce their new fall schedules, while international buyers are currently in Los Angeles attending the annual LA Screenings.
