Big Bang spin-off in works

The Big Bang Theory

The Big Bang Theory

US network CBS is developing a prequel to its long-running hit comedy series The Big Bang Theory.

The Big Bang Theory co-creators Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady, as well showrunner Steve Molaro, will oversee the project, which will focus on the younger years of eccentric character Dr Sheldon Cooper.

None of The Big Bang Theory cast are involved in the new sitcom except Jim Parsons, who plays Cooper and will exec produce.

The Big Bang Theory, which hails from Warner Bros Television, is now in its 10th season but has not been renewed beyond that. It remains the most watched TV comedy in the US, with its current run averaging more than 15 million viewers per episode.

CBS’s slate already contains shows that draw on pre-existent fanbases. The Good Wife spinoff The Good Fight will launch in February, while a rebooted Star Trek series is set to air soon.
