Banijay to help release Indian Hostages

The original version of Hostages

Banijay Asia has joined Indian producer Applause Entertainment for a local remake of Israeli drama format Hostages.

The drama was created by Omri Givon and Rotem Shamir and produced by Chaim Sharir, with Armoza Formats distributing. It tells the story of a top surgeon whose family is seized by masked men after she is chosen to perform surgery on the president of Israel.

The original deal between Armoza and Applause was revealed at MipTV in April.

The show will be made available on an as-yet-unconfirmed Indian streaming service before the end of the year, with shooting currently taking pace in Mumbai.

A US version was produced by Jerry Bruckheimer Television in association with Warner Bros Television for CBS in 2014, while now defunct Channel 10 aired the Israeli version. The show has also previously been picked up by UK broadcaster Channel 4.

Sameer Nair, CEO at Applause, which is owned by Indian conglomerate the Aditya Birla Group, said: “Hostages is an enthralling and captivating concept, which will hook viewers,” adding that there is “a clear demand for a show like this in the digital space.”

Banijay Asia was formed in April by Banijay Group and Deepak Dhar, the former head of Endemol India.
