Amazon visits K-pop for drama

Amazon has made its first moves into South Korean production by ordering a drama about the country’s famous K-pop scene.

Idolm@ster features aspiring K-pop singers starring as themselves as they attempt to break into the Korean entertainment industry.

The show will be available in Japanese and English from 2017 and is based on the eponymous Japanese video game created by Bandai Namco Entertainment.

The firm developed the live-action series and will produce with Amazon and Japanese distributor Interactive Media Mix.

Amazon’s Prime SVoD service is available in Japan, as well as territories including the US and the UK, and James Farrell, head of content for Amazon in Asia Pacific, called the show “the perfect combination of Japanese idol culture and Korean drama power.”

“The idols include K-Pop sirens as well as Japanese and other international singers, and we’re confident that The Idolm@ster fans and viewers will become addicted to watching their careers bloom.”

Amazon arrived in Japan in August and has been expanding its output in the region with originals including superhero drama Ultraman Orb, documentary Invisible Tokyo and comedy Work in Space.

Netflix launched in Korea last year, as revealed by C21,  and moved into originals from the country earlier in 2016.
