RuPaul’s Drag Race heads to Spain

RuPaul’s Drag Race debuted in 2009

Spanish broadcaster Atresmedia has commissioned a local version of the RuPaul’s Drag Race format for its Atresplayer Premium SVoD service.

Drag Race Spain is being produced by Atresmedia TV in collaboration with Buendía Estudios and executive produced by the format’s US creator World of Wonder (WOW). Randy Barbato, Fenton Bailey and Tom Campbell are executive producing.

The deal with Atresplayer Premium was brokered by Passion Distribution director of sales and coproductions Nick Tanner and senior sales manager Eliana Barbosa. Passion will distribute the series globally in line with Passion Distribution and WOW’s distribution strategy.

The episodes of the latest international iteration will be available on the producer’s WOW Presents Plus streaming service in the UK, US and other international markets day-and-date with their Spanish premiere.

The Spanish version of the franchise joins adaptations across Thailand, Chile, Canada, the Netherlands and the UK, where it has been renewed for second and third seasons.

In a joint statement, World of Wonder co-founders Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato said: “It is such an honour to welcome Spain to the Drag Race family, partner with Artres and bring the fierce, fabulous glamour of Spanish queens to new audiences around the world on WOW Presents Plus. In these dark and challenging times, we believe people need Drag Race’s joy, laughter, and heart now more than ever.”
