Pantaya tokes on cannabis drama

Spanish-language streaming service Pantaya has commissioned Cannabica, a drama set in the world of medicinal cannabis, from Latin American drama producer Dynamo.

Pantaya, a joint venture between Lionsgate and Hemisphere Media Group, will air the 10×45’ series in the US and Puerto Rico, while Sony Pictures Television will handle worldwide distribution.

Production begins later this month and the series aims to take a fresh look at the future of the cannabis industry from a different and modern perspective.

The plot focuses on three young entrepreneurs who bet on the medicinal cannabis market, which has just been legalised in Colombia. However, the trio have a secret that haunts them. The company appears to be built on a fatal lie and an ambitious journalist will not rest until she discovers the truth.

The drama stars María Elisa Camargo (Tarde te Conocí, El Barón), Carolina Gaitán (Sin Senos Sí Hay Paraíso, El Final del Paraíso, Narcos), Juan Pablo Urrego (Distrito Salvaje, El Final del Paraíso, Historia de un crimen: Colmenares) and Sebastián Eslava (Distrito Salvaje, Narcos, Siempre Bruja).

The series was co-created by Natalia Echeverri, executive producer at Dynamo, director Andrés Beltrán (Distrito Salvaje, Bolívar) and screenwriter Esteban Orozco.
