TelevisaUnivision-owned streamer ViX+ has gone into development on a workplace comedy with Eugenio Derbez’s 3Pas Studios.

The Spanish-language series, They Came at Night (working title), which follows the group of underdogs who went on to create the acclaimed Spanish version of 1930 horror film Dracula, is being developed under TelevisaUnivision and 3Pas Studios’ previously announced first-look deal.

The project will star Mexican actor Derbez, who runs 3Pas Studios alongside his producing partner Ben Odell.

It is created and written by Rob Greenberg and Bob Fisher (The Valet, Overboard), with Odell, Derbez and Javier Williams serving as executive producers for 3Pas Studios.

“I have not worked in scripted Spanish language TV comedy for well over 10 years and was looking for something really special to come back,” said Derbez.

“This story really jumped out at me because it tells the story of Latinos always having to accomplish more with less resources and harder conditions. It’s also a world we’ve never explored in Spanish language TV – Hollywood in the 30s but like every moment in US history, the Latinos were there and doing their part even if history forgot them.”

As it looks to build a broad pipeline of programming, ViX+ has inked agreements with several companies including Propagate Fuego, Mexican-American star Salma Hayek Pinault’s Ventanarosa Productions and Spain’s The Mediapro Studios.

SVoD platform ViX+, which launched in July in the US, Mexico and most of Spanish-speaking Latin America, plans to release more than 70 original series and movies within its first year.
