RTL recommissions Sisi for second season as series is sold into Canada, Latin America

Filming on Sisi S2 has begun in Latvia

MIPTV: German broadcaster RTL has renewed period drama Sisi for a second season on the back of strong ratings and sales into more than 100 territories, including Canada and Latin America.

Dramatising the story of Empress Elisabeth of Austria in the 1800s, the series has been sold to The Walt Disney Company and Mediaset in Spain and Starz Entertainment for Latin America by German distributor Beta Film, it was announced at MipTV this week.

In Canada, meanwhile, it will air on the main network of pubcaster the CBC and its streamer CBC Gem, as well as on French-Canadian pubcaster Radio-Canada for its streaming service Ici Tou.tv and TV channel Ici Télé.

The six-part first season, produced by Germany’s Storyhouse, has previously been picked up by France’s TF1, Italy’s Canale 5, Hungary’s RTL, Brazil’s Globo Play and throughout Eastern Europe on Viasat World’s Epic Drama channel.

Filming on season two has just begun in Latvia, with Austrian pubcaster ORF returning as a broadcaster for the sophomore instalment. RTL said the first season achieved impressive ratings on OTT platform RTL+ and its linear channel.

The show stars Dominique Devenport (Night Train to Lisbon) and Jannik Schümann (Center of My World, Charité) in the lead roles. Sven Bohse (Dark Woods) shares directing responsibilities with Miguel Alexandre (Spy City) on season two. Hauke Bartel is the executive producer for RTL, with Markus Böhlke and Sylke Poensgen also exec producing.
