Based on Alexandre Dumas’ 19th century novel The Count of Monte Cristo, the six-part dramatic thriller will star Cuban-American actor William Levy (Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, En Brazos de un Asesino) in the lead role.

The modern-day adaptation is being penned by Lidia Fraga and Jacobo Díaz, with Alberto Ruiz-Rojo set to direct.

The series is produced by David Martinez, with Madrid-based Secuoya Studios and Sergio Pizzolante executive producing alongside Levy and his producing partner Jeff Goldberg. The project will premiere on Pantaya in the US and Puerto Rico.

Levy plays Alejandro Montecristo, an enigmatic figure who bursts into the public eye and raises concerns amongst the world’s elite because the origin of his fortune and past is unknown.

LA-based Pantaya, which serves US Hispanic and Latin American audiences, is seeking to expand its slate of originals in 2022. Recent co-commissions from the Hemisphere Media Group-owned platform include sci-fi thriller El Refugio and an adaptation of Leo Tolstoy’s novel Anna Karenina.
