Netflix unveils five Spanish originals

Global streaming giant Netflix has unveiled a further five Spanish originals, including a superhero comedy, a teen drama from the creator of Elite and an anime adaptation.

Carlos Montero, who was behind previous Netflix Spanish original Elite, is working on El Desorden que Dejas (The Mess You Leave), based on his novel that was published by Planeta.

The plot focuses on a young teacher who gives her marriage a second chance by moving to the town where her husband grew up, only to find that another teacher there died in mysterious circumstances.

Endemol Shine-owned Zeppelin is working on fantasy animated series Memorias de Idhun (Idhun’s Memories), which is based on Laura Gallego’s Memorias de Idhún anime trilogy. Gallego and Andrés Carrión are writing the show, with Maite Ruiz de Austri directing.

In comedy, Nacho Vigalondo is directing El Vecino (The Neighbour), which focuses on a down-on-his-luck unemployed man who is granted superpowers by a dying alien. Carlos de Pando and Sara Antuña are the showrunners on the series, which is based on the El Vecino graphic novels that were created by Santiago García and Pepo Pérez and published by Astiberri. Zeta Audiovisual produces.

Finally, eight-part Valeria, about a writer in crisis, is being produced by Plano a Plano, while three-episode miniseries Dias de Navidad (Christmas Days) is being worked on by Filmax. The latter follows four sisters during three different periods of their lives.

Francisco Ramos, VP of original series for Netflix in Spain, unveiled the shows, which will launch next year in all 190 of the streamer’s territories.

“At Netflix we want to produce local stories with a global appeal, and Spain has continuously generated great audiovisual content both nationally and for the rest of the world,” he said.

“With this new selection of projects, all different from each other and with writers of the highest level, new stories will be created that will thrill users in all parts of the world.”

Netflix is also in production on new seasons of existing Spanish originals Las Chicas del Cable, Elite and La Casa de Papel.
