Netflix makes early Orange renewal

Netflix has ordered a third season of Orange is the New Black, a month before its second debuts.

The US video-on-demand service has greenlit a further 13 episodes of the comedy drama ahead of its second season premiere on June 6.

The Netflix original was similarly renewed for a second run weeks ahead of its series debut last year.

Orange is the New Black, produced by Lionsgate Television, has been adapted by Jenji Kohan from Piper Kerman’s book of the same title. The series follows a New Yorker, played by Taylor Schilling, who goes to prison for a decade-old drugs offence.

The renewal comes as Netflix continues to ramp up its original series output. Earlier this year, the California-based streamer gave political drama House of Cards a third season before the second came out.
