Netflix helps support Mexican producers

Global streamer Netflix has committed to supporting Mexican producers affected by the Covid-19 pandemic with the launch of the US$750,000 Miradas Fund.

The initiative is a partnership with Ambulante, the not-for-profit organisation founded by Mexican actors Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna and producer and activist Elena Fortes.

The fund aims to support more than 80 productions in Mexico that have been affected by Covid-19, helping more than 500 people. The production teams represented include 30 different Indigenous and Afro groups in Central America.

A committee of 11 industry heavyweights selected the projects to be helped, all of which are either shooting or in post-production.

Paulina Suarez, general director of Ambulante, said: “Crises reveal the critical role that the arts play in our social life. Adverse situations can often bring new collective narratives that help us to imagine more just futures, where solidarity prevails. Above all, supporting the voice and vision of community filmmakers working in diverse territories allows us to envision what is still possible.”
