Miranda heads to ZDFneo as BBC Studios Germany’s first commission

Ruby (working title) is currently in production

German public broadcaster ZDF’s younger-skewing channel ZDFneo has greenlit a local version of BBC comedy Miranda, the first commission for BBC Studios Germany.

The newly formed German production base will coproduce the eight-part series, which has the working title Ruby, with Studio Zentral.

Directed by Natascha Beller, Ruby stars Anna Böger as the titular character, who manoeuvres her way through the challenges of everyday life in a clumsy way, much to her mother Alexa (Irene Rindje)’s horror.

The show, which is currently being filmed in Cologne, has been adapted by Giulia Becker and Anika Soisson.

The original series was launched on BBC2 in 2009. It was created by British comedian Miranda Hart, who played the lead.

This will be the second international version of Miranda, which has previously been adapted for Fox Television in the US, where it is locally known as Call me Kat and was recently renewed for a second series.

Philipp Schmid, MD of BBC Studios Germany, said: “BBC Studios’ scripted format for Miranda Hart’s Miranda is so warm, funny and timeless that we wanted to make a German version from the day we launched our new business here. We are excited to make it for our German audience and hope they will be just as entertained by Ruby as British audiences were by Miranda.”
