Lat Am SVoD subs ‘to double by 2026’

Subscriptions to SVoD services in Latin America will more than double over the next five years, according to a report from UK-based Digital TV Research.

The report, titled Latin America OTT TV & Video Forecasts, predicts that Latin America will have 116 million SVoD subscriptions by 2026, up from 53 million at the end of 2020.

Brazil will contribute 44 million to the 2026 total, followed by Mexico with 29 million. Five US-based platforms – Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, Apple TV+ and HBO – will account for 90% of the region’s SVoD subscriptions by end-2026, the report said.

Netflix will contribute the most, with 49 million subscriptions in 2026, up from 37.5 million at end-2020 and 41 million in 2021. Disney+ will come in next, with 33.3 million subscriptions in 2026, up from 2.2 million at end-2020 and 12.2 million in 2021.

In third place is Amazon, which is expected to reach 14.4 million subscriptions in 2026, up from 5.3 million at end-2020 and 7.2 million in 2021.

HBO Max will have five million subscriptions in 2026, up from 843,000 at end-2020 and 1.3 million in 2021, while local platform Claro Video will see subscriber numbers rise to 3.4 million in 2026, from 2.7 million at end-2020 and just under three million in 2021.

Apple TV+ will have 2.2 million subscribers in 2026, up from 373,000 at end-2020 and 815,000 in 2021. Other platforms will make up a combined total of 8.2 million subscriptions in 2026, up from 3.8 million at end-2020 and just under 5 million in 2021.

Simon Murray, principal analyst at Digital TV Research, said: “There will be a wave of major SVoD platform launches in Latin America during 2021. Paramount+ will start in March, followed by HBO Max and Star+ in June. Discovery+ is also expected expand in the region.”
