Israel’s La Famiglia heads for CBS

La Famiglia from United Studios

US broadcast network CBS is developing a local version of Israeli comedy series La Famiglia.

The Last Happy Couple will be produced by CBS Television Studios in association with James Corden’s production shingle Fulwell 73 and Anonymous Content.

It is based on a format from ITV Studios-owned Armoza Formats and will be written and executive produced by Liz Astrof (The King of Queens, 2 Broke Girls, The Connors).

Also serving as executive producer are Ben Winston and Jeff Grosvenor from Fulwell 73, Robyn Meisinger from Anonymous Content, Ran Dovrat, Avi Belkin, Ohad Perach, Efrat Dror, Zivit Davidovitch and Avi Armoza.

A third season of La Famiglia aired on Channel 13 in Israel this year while the Indian adaptation of the format (locally titled Mind the Malhotras) began streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

Produced by United Studios of Israel, the series follows the lives of a normal suburban family living in the divorce capital of the country. Each episode centres on a new therapy session in which they bring up the most embarrassing, bizarre, awkward and insane moments that are a part of every family’s life.

Sharon Levi, head of sales at Armoza Formats, said: “CBS feels like the natural home for a family comedy like La Famiglia and, with her extensive experience, Liz Astrof is the perfect writer for the project.”

This is the latest foreign format to be picked up for a US version by CBS following its recent acquisition of Red Arrow’s German drama Einstein.
