Canadian pubcaster CBC greenlights trio of original comedies for second season

Comedy series Son of a Critch

Canadian public broadcaster CBC has renewed original comedies Run the Burbs, Son of a Critch and Strays for a second season.

The shows have all been renewed following the recent news that half-hour dramedy Sort Of would also return for a second season.

The new season of each series will debut as part of CBC’s 2022-23 comedy slate.

Created by comedian, writer and actor Andrew Phung (Kim’s Convenience) and filmmaker Scott Townend (The Secret Marathon), Run the Burbs follows a young Vietnamese-Canadian family taking a different approach to living in the suburbs. The series is produced by Pier 21 Films, with Endeavor Content holding international distribution rights.

The renewal for Son of a Critch comes after the series drew the highest audience rating for a CBC comedy since the premiere of Kim’s Convenience in 2016. Produced by Project 10 Productions and Take the Shot Productions in association with CBC and Lionsgate Television, the series tells the story of an 11-year-old boy growing up in Newfoundland in the 80s. It is created by Mark Critch and Tim McAuliffe.

Strays, produced by Thunderbird Entertainment, follows Shannon Power, a character from Kim’s Convenience, as she embarks on a new career in Ontario. The series was developed for television by Kevin White (Kim’s Convenience, Schitt’s Creek), Anita Kapila (Kim’s Convenience, Son of a Critch) and Clara Altimas (Kim’s Convenience).

“CBC’s rich comedy legacy continues to shine with this new generation of series that feature original and authentic storytelling, led by talented creative teams,” said Sally Catto, GM, entertainment, factual and sports, CBC.

“Run the Burbs, Son of a Critch and Strays provide audiences across the country with great laughter and also, each in its own way, a sense of Canadian identity. We look forward to seeing how their second seasons unfold.”
