Netflix ties Gervais to overall deal

Global streaming giant Netflix has tied British writer and comedian Ricky Gervais to an overall production deal after renewing his comedy drama series After Life.

The second season of After Life, in which Gervais plays a cynical local newspaper reporter embittered by the death of his wife, premiered on the streaming service last month.

Netflix has confirmed the series has been renewed for a third run, again produced by Gervais’ Derek Productions, and that Gervais has become the latest high-profile talent to sign a multi-year production deal with the streamer.

The partnership will see Gervais produce scripted series and stand-up comedy specials exclusively for Netflix.

He joins big-name content creators such as Ryan Murphy and Shonda Rhimes in signing mega-bucks exclusive deals with Netflix. Hollywood Reporter first reported the news.
