As the annual Groundhog Day festival approaches, 11-year-old Benny dreads his family’s trip to the cabin, convinced his parents will announce their divorce. When he learns that a groundhog’s shadow can predict six more weeks of winter, Benny hatches a plan to stall the trip—and maybe save his family.
With help from his best friend Sadie, he kidnaps the town’s beloved groundhog, Gary, but keeping a celebrity groundhog under wraps is no easy task. As the festival nears, close calls with Ranger Pete and pressure from Mayor Twiss push Benny to his limits and as everything inevitably unravels, Benny discovers that what he’s really afraid of isn’t the end of winter—it’s the end of his family. And while you can’t control the seasons, you can choose to weather them together.
