A New Anzac documents the monumental $500 million redevelopment of the Australian War Memorial. Filmed over the course of three years, the four-part series follows this transformative period through the eyes of the curators, historians, and contemporary veterans.
Behind-the-scenes access allows the public to see how the experiences of veterans such as the ‘Bushmaster Debbie’ crew transform into a new exhibit, and how the staff of the AWM navigate delicate tasks such as airlifting an F/A-18 Hornet into the new galleries, or the attention to detail required when creating new dioramas.
As new spaces are constructed and existing galleries decommissioned, the complexity of Australia’s contemporary military and peacekeeping history is revealed.
Through captured footage, archival resources and interviews, A New Anzac reflects on the institution’s role in modern day Australia, and honours those who have served.
WHY IT MATTERS
This fascinating series taps into universal questions about memory, identity, and how nations interpret and preserve their past, while looking to the future.
At its core, the series explores how a country re-examines its history in real time. The transformation of the Australian War Memorial becomes a lens through which global audiences can consider their own national institutions—whether it’s the Imperial War Museum, the Smithsonian Institution, or countless other museums grappling with how to present contested histories.
