Lyle to lead Nat Geo

David Lyle has been named CEO of National Geographic Channels US, and is also taking over immediate responsibility for programming globally.

The former head of Fox Look and Fox Reality will report to Nat Geo Channels’ board, while Nat Geo Channels US president Steve Schiffman now reports to him.

Lyle (left) has had an interim format development role at Nat Geo’s West Coast office. Senior VP of global development Bridget Whalen Hunnicutt will assume his previous duties but will remain in Washington DC. The company stressed that the West Coast office will remain open.

His new role gives him responsibility for National Geographic Channel (NGC), Nat Geo Wild and Nat Geo Mundo.

“David brings extensive creative experience and a strong international perspective to this critical role,” said Tim Kelly, president of the National Geographic Society.

“He will be focused on delivering compelling popular programming that reflects, enhances and delivers on the substance of the National Geographic brand and mission.”

Lyle has been with Nat Geo since Fox Networks Group decided to close US formats vendor Fox Look in March, before Fox parent News Corp bought Shine Group for £415m (US$679m) a month later.

It still hasn’t been revealed how Fox Look’s formats, which included Australian format The Big Sell and US cablenet Oxygen’s series The Glee Project, are being sold on the international market.

However, UK satcaster BSkyB’s pick-up of The Glee Project was announced as being made through 20th Century Fox Television Distribution.
