Pitching: Goat Girl

What is the biggest issue facing the animation industry?
Animation continues to be seen as a lesser form of entertainment in relation to
live action, and still falls under the assumption that it’s a storytelling tool mainly for children’s television. As such, animated products receive smaller budgets and less funding opportunities as a whole, even though the industry continues to grow in popularity each year.

What is your company doing in response to this?
Our development slate is due to be revealed in early 2021 and it will contain a number of projects that break out of the traditional animation formats and genres that we have all become very used to seeing at markets. We want to explore how we can push the boundaries of animation.

What impact could the Covid-19 pandemic have on the animation industry long-term?
We are so fortunate the animation industry has been largely able to continue with a business-as-usual approach. We already had so many protocols for working from home set up, and we survive only by distanced partnerships and coproductions by default. Hopefully this type of consistency will result in more animated commissioning in future.

How are SVoD services changing the animation industry?
They open up the world so much. We are all consuming media at huge rates, and the ability to meet both niche markets and wide markets on each individual viewer’s own terms has changed the game a lot, making it possible to create new and exciting entertainment with more freedom than before.

Tell us about the project you are pitching at Cartoon Forum.
Goat Girl (52×11′) is for kids aged six to 11. This is the story of Gigi, a 13-year-old girl who just happens to have been raised by mountain goats. But now that she’s a teenager, it’s time that Gigi spread her wings, so she’s sent off to boarding school to spend time around actual people. It’s a quirky comedy with a hero who tackles every challenge with a goat-like stubbornness and strength. Gigi’s journey is about being comfortable in your own skin, being happy being you and embracing your differences and even your quirks.
