Winners celebrate at the C21 International Drama Awards

CONTENT LONDON: Netflix drug drama Narcos, Nordic hit The Bridge and German Cold War spy thriller Deutschland 83 were the big winners at the C21 International Drama Awards in London.

Narcos, from director Jose Padilha and US-based Gaumont International Television, scooped the coveted Editor’s Choice Award, while Wagner Moura, who played drug lord Pablo Escobar in the series, won the Best Male Performance category.

Deutschland 83, from FremantleMedia’s German prodco UFA Fiction and distributed by FremantleMedia International, took home the Best Non-English-Language Drama gong as well as Best Casting.

The Bridge, from Filmlance International for Denmark’s DR and Sweden’s SVT, won Best Returning Drama Series while Sofia Helin scooped Best Female Performance.

Among the other winners were How to Murder Your Wife (Best TV Movie), Wolf Hall (Best English-Language Drama) and Limitless (Best Fall Season Network Show).

The winners were announced at the glittering C21 International Drama Awards Show at BFI in London. In excess of 200 programmes were entered this year, with the finalists chosen from votes cast by 70 leading drama commissioners.

The winners of the inaugural C21 International Drama Series Script Competition in association with Entertainment One and Creative England were also announced.

123 King’s Road, from Lucy Wadham and Rosie Miles, was the winning project from the international pitch, while The Ladder, from Fraser Flintham, won the UK prize.

The two winning projects receive £10,000 development funding, time in a writers room on a current series and assistance in taking their drama project to series, with unprecedented access to the global television drama market.
