AMC raises Dead showrunners

AMC has renewed The Walking Dead for a ninth season

AMC has promoted showrunner Scott M Gimple to oversee its entire Walking Dead franchise, including “potential brand extensions” across multiple platforms.

The news comes as the US network has renewed The Walking Dead for a ninth season, to premiere later this year.

Taking on the new title of chief content officer, Gimple will oversee the flagship show, spin-off series Fear the Walking Dead and future spin-offs.

Meanwhile, Angela Kang – who has been a writer on the show since 2011 and co-exec producer since 2013 – is being promoted to exec producer and showrunner of The Walking Dead, starting with season nine.

Gimple said: “As the show closes in on its 10th year, I’m honoured to keep working with the talented, dedicated people behind and in front of the camera to make it all it can be, while expanding the world of The Walking Dead with new narratives like Fear the Walking Dead and a whole host of truly cool stories ahead.”

The news was announced at AMC and Sundance’s presentation to the Television Critic’s Association (TCA) over the weekend.

Sundance also confirmed that it was again on board a second season of psychological drama Liar, which is coproduced with UK commercial broadcaster ITV.

The series is produced by Two Brother Pictures and will return to screens in the US in 2019.
