CONTENT STRATEGIES: Uncovering programming opportunities worldwide

The River flows through iTunes

US network ABC’s new paranormal thriller The River will be available via Apple iTunes in the UK 24 hours after its stateside debut.

The River premieres in the US on February 7 and iTunes users in the UK will be able to download the first two episodes the next day.

The eight-episode series, produced by ABC Studios and Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Films, follows the disappearance of a famous wildlife expert and TV personality deep in the Amazon and his friends and family’s efforts to find him.

This is the first time Disney has pre-sold a television series to iTunes in the UK ahead of its terrestrial debut, with several broadcasters in negotiations for the series. Steve Jobs was Disney’s biggest individual shareholder and Mouse house president Bob Iger was given a seat on the Apple board following Jobs’ death last year.

The River is produced by Spielberg and DreamWorks Television’s Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey, while Michael Green is showrunner and exec producer. Oren Peli (Paranormal Activity), Zack Estrin, Jason Blum and Steven Schneider also exec produce.
