ZDFneo joins Beta’s Mars mission

MIPTV: Germany’s youth-skewing network ZDFneo has boarded a six-part science-fiction series backed by producer Neuesuper (8 Days) and distributor Beta Film.

Children of Mars is set in a near future when an eccentric tycoon sets up a one-way mission for 13 astronauts, including himself, to colonise the Red Planet. But each crew member has a past they cannot escape.

The series is currently in development, with director Christian Schwochow (The Crown, Bad Banks) helming the project.

Production is led by Neuesuper’s Simon Amberger, who heads the company with Korbinian Dufter and Rafael Parente. Beta Film, which has been involved in financing the series, is handling worldwide sales.

Frank Zervos, ZDF’s senior VP of films and series, said: “After the big success of Bad Banks we are looking forward to starting the next project with director Christian Schwochow. After a contemporary theme, we’re moving towards the future. Together with him, production company Neuesuper and further top creative talent we continue our joint mission to deliver ‘high-end fictional TV made in Germany’ – on nothing less than Mars.”

Beta’s MD Moritz von Kruedener added: “Our aim is to support development and financing of high-budget projects like Children of Mars out of Germany and Europe for international exploitation. Partners like ZDF, Christian Schwochow and Neuesuper are key in making an ambitious project like this successful.”

Neuesuper last month saw its apocalyptic drama 8 Days launch on Sky Deutschland.
