ZDFE, Red Balloon dive in with Alea Aquarius

Alea Aquarius centres on a ‘mergirl’

MIPCOM: Distributor ZDF Enterprises (ZDFE) and prodco Red Balloon Film are developing German young-adult novels Alea Aquarius for television.

Following their partnership on fellow YA series Heirs of the Night, which was launched at MipJunior at the weekend, ZDFE and Red Balloon’s Dorothee Beinemeier will again work together with screenwriter Maria von Heland to develop this new series.

Based on the novels by Tanya Stewner, Alea Aquarius has been conceived as a 26×26’ English-language series and feature film. The books tell the story of ‘mergirl’ Alea and her friends from the Alpha Cru, who together want to save the oceans and the Earth from destruction. Production is due to be completed  by 2022.

Arne Lohmann, VP of ZDFE.junior at ZDFE, said: “In the days of Fridays for Future and Greta Thunberg, environmental issues are a hot topic, especially among young people, and this series could not be more in tune with the times.”

Beinemeier added: “With Alea Aquarius, author Tanya Stewner has succeeded to tell a story that meets the zeitgeist and spirit of an extraordinary generation, as if she had guessed that Greta Thunberg would come.
