YouTube expands US TV service

YouTube is expanding the reach of its live television service in the US by launching in a further 10 regions.

YouTube TV, which was unveiled earlier this year, is aimed at cord cutters and offers around 40 US cable and broadcast networks.

The service costs US$35 and had initially been available only in LA, New York, Philadelphia, Chicago and San Francisco.

The Google-owned company has now expanded that reach into 10 further metro areas, including Washington DC, Houston, Atlanta, Miami, Dallas and Phoenix.

Subscribers will be able to access all original programming from the Google-owned service’s pay offering YouTube Red as well as live access to ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC in nine out of 10 of the new regions.

The service also offers cable channels including ESPN, USA, Bravo and FX, while Showtime will be available for an additional fee. BBC America, Sundance Channel and Telemundo have also been added.

Delivered over the internet, the service is designed to attract younger viewers put off by costly pay TV packages.

YouTubeTV is competing with AT&T’s DirecTV Now and Dish Network’s Sling TV, while Hulu and Apple are also entering the live TV market.

The company will roll out the service across more regions in the US over the coming months but has previously said it has no plans to take YouTube TV international.
