Will Ferrell backs Amazon economy doc

Amazon has ordered a documentary series offering a comedic take on the global economy from Will Ferrell and Adam McKay, with actor Kal Penn as host.

The as-yet-untitled series will be produced by California-based indie Intellectual Property and Ferrell and McKay’s shingle Gary Sanchez Productions. Ferrell and McKay will exec produce alongside Kevin Messick, Eli Holzman, Aaron Saidman and Aliyah Silverstein.

Adam Davidson, the co-founder of NPR’s Planet Money podcast, is co-exec producing and Penn, a former White House associate director of public engagement, is a consulting producer on the project.

The docuseries will see Penn explore themes such as cryptocurrencies, money laundering and death and corruption, offering Amazon Prime members an insight into the financial world.

Penn will embark on a global tour of different economic climates while looking at the comedic eccentricities around the subject.
