Weinstein, Miramax eye TV spin-offs

The founders of The Weinstein Company (TWC) are reuniting with Miramax in a coproduction and distribution pact that could see TV versions of films like Good Will Hunting hitting screens.

Miramax was original set up by Harvey and Bob Weinstein in 1979 and was bought by Disney in 1993. The pair left the company in 2005 and launched a failed bid to buy it back in 2010 when they were outbid by investment bodies Qatar Holding and Colony Capital.

Now their present company is entering into a production pact that could see new development for titles from Miramax’s back catalogue including TV versions of Good Will Hunting and Flirting with Disaster.

TWC will retain US rights to any feature films the companies work on together, while Miramax will distribute overseas.

It’s the latest move into the small screen space by TWC. In October the company came on board Lookout Point/BBC Worldwide epic War and Peace as a coproduction partner and last month it picked up US distribution rights to BBC2 Caryn Mandabach/Tiger Aspect drama Peaky Blinders.

Earlier this month, the BBC ordered a one-off drama special about comedy duo Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy from TWC.
