Weinstein doc heads to Hulu

SVoD service Hulu has paid a “seven-figure sum” for US rights to the BBC’s feature documentary about the Harvey Weinstein scandal.

Untouchable is from Simon and Jonathan Chinn’s prodco Lightbox and has been directed by Ursula McFarlane, with the company’s founders producing alongside Poppy Dixon.

It is being coproduced with the BBC, which will air the film on BBC2 following its theatrical release. Media Finance Capital (MFC) funded the film alongside the BBC, with MFC duo David Gilbery and Charles Dorfman exec producing with the BBC’s Simon Young and Tom McDonald.

The doc claims to offer the inside story of the rise and fall of Hollywood producer Weinstein, who has been accused of sexual misconduct by dozens of women. It explores how he acquired and deployed his power over several decades and the damage wrought from his alleged abuses.

Untouchable premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and will have its European premiere at the Sheffield International Documentary Festival (DocFest) in June.

Embankment Films negotiated the seven-figure deal on behalf of the producers and will handle the theatrical roll-out in international markets prior to Hulu’s release. Embankment head of sales Calum Gray negotiated the deal with Hulu’s Belisa Balaban.

In a joint statement, Simon Chinn and Jonathan Chinn said: “We are thrilled that Untouchable has been acquired by Hulu, which is the perfect home in the US for a film which should serve both as a cautionary tale for the younger generation and an enduring example of how seemingly unchecked power can be held to account when courageous people choose to speak out.”
