We Are Who We Are goes global

We Are Who We Are comes from the filmmaker behind Oscar-nominated 2017 hit Call Me By Your Name

South Africa’s M-Net and Australia’s SBS are among broadcasters and platforms from 133 territories worldwide to have picked up Luca Guadagnino’s drama series We Are Who We Are.

An HBO-Sky coproduction, the eight-part series tells the story of two American kids who live on a US military base in Italy.

Distributed by Fremantle, We Are Who We Are is produced by Lorenzo Mieli for The Apartment and Mario Gianani for Wildside, both Fremantle companies, with Small Forward. It launched on HBO in the US in September.

The other broadcasters and platforms that have acquired the series include HBO Europe for the Nordics, Spain, Portugal and CEE; HBO Latin America for Lat Am and the Caribbean; and Starzplay for Switzerland, Austria, Belgium, Germany, France, Luxembourg and the Netherlands.

It has also been picked up by more.tv Russia, GO Plc in Malta, BluTV in Turkey, Vodafone in Greece, Bell Media’s Super Écran and Crave in Canada, and South Korea’s Watcha.

Fremantle previously sold the series to BBC3 in the UK, where it will launch next week.

We Are Who We Are is written, directed and exec produced by Guadagnino (Call Me By Your Name). Paolo Giordano and Francesca Manieri also wrote alongside Guadagnino, with Elena Recchia, Nick Hall, Sean Conway and Francesco Melzi d’Eril also exec producing.

“Luca’s first TV series, in his distinctive filming style, features a fresh and diverse cast to tell a universal coming-of age story that reflects many of the issues that matter to young audiences today,” said Jens Richter, CEO of international at Fremantle.

“Questioning the constructs of gender, identity, friendship and family, this premium and innovative series could not be more timely or relevant, and we are proud to bring this fantastic artistic vision to audiences around the world.”
