The new deal between Abrams’ company and the US media conglomerate will see Bad Robot produce TV, films, digital content, and games for WarnerMedia.

Bad Robot was already working with WarnerMedia to produce shows such as Westworld and Castle Rock. The agreement has an immediate start and will run through to 2024.

John Stankey, CEO of WarnerMedia, said: “We are extremely excited about the potential to deliver remarkable and memorable stories and characters across multiple platforms to audiences around the world. JJ, Katie and all of Bad Robot bring extraordinary vision, exquisite filmmaking, and exemplary industry leadership to this endeavor and our company.”

Under the new deal, Bad Robot will also be able to sell the TV content it produces under the WarnerMedia umbrella to external outlets, and will be able to honour existing film commitments with Paramount.

Additionally, WarnerMedia’s forthcoming streaming service, HBO Max, has ordered 10-part original series Americanah.

The series is based on Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s best-selling novel of the same name and will star Lupita Nyong’o. It tells the story of a woman born in Nigeria and her experiences upon moving to the US.

The series has been adapted by Danai Gurira, who also executive produces alongside Nyong’o for Eba Productions, Plan B Entertainment, Andrea Calderwood for Potboiler Television, Didi Rea and Danielle Del for D2 Productions and Nancy Won.

Sarah Aubrey, head of original content at HBO Max, said: “Americanah has sparked a cultural phenomenon and is revered by fans around the world. It has affected me deeply as one of the most moving, socially relevant and romantic stories of our time. With exceptional talent like Lupita and Danai in front of and behind the camera, this series will give viewers a uniquely heartfelt and unforgettable experience.”
