Viu unveils eight more originals

Hong Kong-based OTT service Viu has unveiled its latest originals slate, featuring eight shows from producers across Asia.

Originals from Malaysia include Baha Don, directed by Kye Syed Fariz, and Kopitiam, based on the eponymous TV show, while Indian drama The Grill will explore the adventures of a student studying engineering.

Hong Kong dramas include The Gutter, Psycho Detective 2 and Till Death Do Us Part, the latter starring Sheren Tang, while Rewrite is from Indonesia and The Zodiac is from the Middle East.

Viu has been steadily expanding its originals output over recent years, with shows such as The Publicist from Indonesia and a remake of The Bridge, which has HBO Asia attached.

The streamer plans to launch 80 titles this year across scripted and unscripted, following growth that has seen its monthly active users nearly doubling to 30 million over 2018.

Janice Lee, MD at PCCW Media, said the streamer was learning “from what our 30 million Viu-ers enjoy watching” to develop its Viu Original offering.

“We plan to continue investing in original content by working with local talent and the creative industry in the region with an aim to release over 80 titles in 2019.

“The Viu Original series also allows us to experiment with different creative formats and push for more innovation in production and partnerships in the industry,” she added.

Viu has enjoyed particular unscripted success with No Sleep No FOMO, which saw 10 celebs and social media influencers from across Asia competing to complete various missions across the continent with audience participation. Discovery is now working with the company on the show.
