Viacom brings back Rugrats

Viacom-owned companies Nickelodeon and Paramount are relaunching iconic animated children’s show Rugrats with a new series and live-action hybrid feature film.

Rugrats made its debut in 1991

The property will return to Nickelodeon for a 26-episode TV series, executive produced by its creators Arlene Klasky, Gábor Csupó and Paul Germain.

The series is already in production in Burbank, California. Additional news of the series, including an air date and casting, will be announced in the coming months, Viacom said.

Rugrats, which focuses on the day-to-day lives of a group of toddlers, launched in August 1991 and became a huge hit, spawning consumer products and three theatrical releases.

The latest Rugrats movie, a live-action film featuring CGI characters, will be written by David Goodman and is set to be released in November 2020 by Paramount Players.

The latter is the division of Paramount Pictures that develops and produces co-branded feature films with other Viacom brands.

“Rugrats is hands-down one of the most celebrated cartoons in TV history, and we are thrilled for a whole new audience to meet these iconic characters in brand new adventures,” said Sarah Levy, chief operating officer at Viacom Media Networks and interim president of Nickelodeon.

Rugrats joins the recently announced return of Blue’s Clues as the latest show Nickelodeon is bringing back for today’s kids and families, alongside Rocko’s Modern Life and Invader Zim.
